INTERMEDIATE ROCK PROGRAM

From Hendrix to Clapton to Eagles to Sting... rock and roll never dies at the Young Musicians' Camp... study your favorite songs... learn soloing techniques... master rhythm styles... all with an emphasis on performance... rock and roll is here to stay!


So... If you SING, play PIANO, BASS, GUITAR, or DRUMS, and will be entering grades 5-8* in the fall AND have been playing for 2 years or more, then the INTERMEDIATE ROCK PROGRAM is for you! Even If you don't have experience playing in a rock band... we welcome you to our Rock Program!


* Younger students are welcome to enroll with a teacher recommendation.


PROGRAM DESCRIPTION


Your daily schedule includes a total of 5 classes: Rock Band (2 periods), Contemporary Music Theory, and 2 Electives. We break for lunch, which is included in our program. You can extend your day by enrolling in our optional classes or private lessons. Each session ends with our amazing camp concerts - given by you!

Many of our advanced campers started in the Intermediate Program and now attend music magnet high schools.



REQUIREMENTS


  • Entering grades 5-8 in the fall. (younger students may enroll with a teacher recommendation)
  • Have been singing or playing your instrument for 2 years or more.
  • PLEASE NOTE: All applicants who meet these requirements will be accepted to the Camp!


HOW TO APPLY


  • Review the Daily Schedule to learn about the classes offered, and choose your electives and Optional Classes.
  • The Camp will email our "Teacher Recommendation" form to your child's music teacher. This is to confirm that your camper is in the correct level. Make sure you know the e-mail address of your school or private music teacher before you start to register.

INTERMEDIATE ROCK PROGRAM

DROP OFF at the Frost School of Music

9:00 - 10:00

ENSEMBLE

Rock Band: In this ensemble you will play music in both Contemporary and Classic rock styles.


10:15 - 11:15

MUSIC THEORY-CONTEMPORARY

There is more to music than reading notes, and the summer is the best time to improve your knowledge or learn something new about scales, chords, composing, improvising, and ear training. This class is geared especially for modern rock and jazz players.


11:30 - 12:00

LUNCH (Lunch is included in the camp tuition)

In the UM Cafeteria, you will be able to select from the grill (hamburgers, hot dogs, French fries), salad bar, pizza, hot meal of the day, and the deli. Fresh fruits, desserts, and beverages are all included.


12:15 - 1:15

ROCK LIVE!

Learn about famous Rock bands by listening and playing. You will study different styles such as: Van Halen, Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, and Pink Floyd. Jam sessions will also be a part of this class!


1:30 - 2:30

ELECTIVE 1 - our elective classes are your chance to try something new! No experience is necessary!

  • Songwriting: learn about the different styles of songs. This class will create an original piece.
  • Jazz Pop Vocal Ensemble: if you sing rock, here's your opportunity to learn something new!
  • Jazz Rock Guitar Ensemble.
  • Digital Sound Design: You will explore digital editing, mixing, and mastering techniques, using the software Logic Pro 10. Students will be encouraged to write, record, and produce an original composition using these techniques.

Snacks (chips, cookies) are served!


2:45 - 3:45

ELECTIVE 2

  • Piano Lab: be coached on techniques used in contemporary piano styles.
  • Blues Ensemble.
  • Improv Workshop: if you have never tried it or if you have already been doing it - this class will improve your skills.
  • Digital Sound Design: You will explore digital editing, mixing, and mastering techniques, using the software Logic Pro 10. Students will be encouraged to write, record, and produce an original composition using these techniques.

REGULAR DISMISSAL at the Frost School of Music

OPTIONAL CLASSES (separate fees apply)

Jazz Rock Jam: Don't want to go home - jam out and have fun!

Piano Lab: whether you already play piano or if you want to learn, practice in our piano studio under the guidance of our expert instructors.

Private Instruction: Individual lessons with the Camp faculty!
