IF YOU ARE A VOCALIST WHO WILL BE ENTERING GRADES 8-12 IN THE FALL AND YOU ARE AN EXPERIENCED SINGER, THEN THE ADVANCED MUSICAL THEATER AND CONTEMPORARY VOICE PROGRAM IS RIGHT FOR YOU!

SO... JOIN US FOR AN IN-DEPTH MUSICAL THEATER PROGRAM FOR VOCALISTS AND ALSO TO EXPLORE NEW AVENUES IN THE FIELD OF CONTEMPORARY MUSIC!

If you are a talented and outstanding vocalist, we offer you the opportunity to interact with our exceptional faculty - including members of the UM Frost School of Music in our highly demanding Advanced Musical Theater and Contemporary Voice Program. Our mission is to bring together students like you from diverse cultural backgrounds and provide you with a challenging college-level experience.

The Program is open to all ADVANCED vocalists who have been recommended by their music teacher.



PROGRAM DESCRIPTION


Your daily schedule includes a total of 5 classes: Musical Theater (2 periods), Music Theory (Fundamentals or College Prep), and 2 Electives! We break for lunch, which is included in our program. You can extend the day by enrolling in an optional class or private lesson. The camp session ends with concerts that take place in one of the Frost School of Music's fine concert halls.

AND - don't forget - we have an awesome Dormitory Program so you can enjoy a total summer music camp experience! Learn More!

If you want to be surrounded 24/7 with kids from all over the US and other countries, if you think you may want to be a music major in a college like UM, if you know that performing or composing is what you want to do - THEN - this is the place for you!



REQUIREMENTS


  • Entering grades 8-12.
  • Should be at an "Advanced" level of musical ability to participate.
  • All applicants who meet our program requirements will be accepted to the Camp!


HOW TO APPLY


  • Review the Daily Schedule to learn about the classes offered, and choose your electives and Optional Classes.
  • The Camp will email our "Teacher Recommendation Form" to your child's music teacher. This is to confirm that your camper is in the correct level. Make sure you know the e-mail address of your school or private music teacher before you start to register.

ADVANCED MUSICAL THEATER AND CONTEMPORARY VOICE PROGRAM

ENSEMBLE

  • Musical Theater: all aspects of performance, vocal technique, acting and choreography will be studied to present scenes from a Broadway musical for the final concert.


10:15 - 11:15

PERFORMANCE PRACTICES*

  • Performance Practices in Musical Theater: a continuation of the ensemble class.


11:30 - 12:00

LUNCH (Lunch is included in the camp tuition)

In the UM Cafeteria, you will be able to select from the grill (hamburgers, hot dogs, French fries), salad bar, pizza, hot meal of the day, and the deli. Fresh fruits, desserts, and beverages are also included.


12:15 - 1:15

ELECTIVE 1

  • Jazz Vocal Ensemble.
  • Songwriting and Composition: for students who have some experience either writing songs (music/lyrics) or instrumental compositions. You will learn about the various kinds of songs and compositions.

1:30 - 2:30

MUSIC THEORY

  • Music Theory: Fundamentals: Master the basics!
  • Music Theory: College Prep: Students who have been accepted to the Frost School of Music cannot enroll in the first semester of Music Theory unless they pass a Theory Fundamentals Exam. Other college music programs have similar requirements. This class will help you prepare for this! Topics that will be covered: Intervals and Scales, Major and Minor Key Signatures, Triads and Seventh Chords, Meter and Rhythm, and Harmonic Progression, Hearing Chord Progressions, Solfege and Sight Singing and Basic Part Writing. (Pre-Requisite: knowledge of Theory Fundamentals)
  • All of the theory classes above use the innovative Frost School of Music experiential model, which incorporates ear training and improvisation.

  • Contemporary Vocal Ensemble: both jazz and pop styles will be studied!
  • Classical Vocal Ensemble.
  • Introduction to Media Writing & Film Scoring.
