If you play a, BRASS, WOODWIND INSTRUMENT or PIANO, BASS, GUITAR, or DRUMS, and will be entering grades 5 - 8* in the fall AND have had 2 years or more of training on your instrument, then the INTERMEDIATE JAZZ PROGRAM is for you! Even If you can improvise only a little or not at all - we welcome you to our Jazz Program!


JOIN US TO HAVE FUN PLAYING JAZZ - WITH AN EMPHASIS ON BECOMING A BETTER IMPROVISER THIS SUMMER!

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION


Your daily schedule includes a total of 5 classes: Contemporary Music Theory, Concert Jazz Band, Jazz Live! (playing jazz in all styles), and 2 Electives. We break for lunch, which is included in our program. You can extend your day by enrolling in our optional classes or private lessons. Each session ends with an amazing camp concert - given by you!

Many of our advanced campers started in the Intermediate Program and now attend music magnet high schools.



REQUIREMENTS


  • Entering grades 5-8 in the fall. (younger students may enroll with a teacher recommendation)
  • Have studied your instrument for 2 or more years.
  • Music Proficiency level 2. and/or completed Book 2 of a standard music series in your instrument. Pianists should have some experience in reading chord symbols.
  • PLEASE NOTE: All applicants who meet these requirements will be accepted to the Camp!


HOW TO APPLY


  • Review the Daily Schedule to learn about the classes offered, and choose your electives and Optional Classes.
  • The Camp will email our "Teacher Recommendation" form to your child's music teacher. This is to confirm that your camper is in the correct level. Make sure you know the e-mail address of your school or private music teacher before you start to register.

ENSEMBLE

Concert Jazz Band: this is your performing ensemble!


10:15 - 11:15

MUSIC THEORY-CONTEMPORARY

There is more to music than reading notes, and the summer is the best time to improve your knowledge or learn something new about scales, chords, composing, improvising, and ear training. This class is geared especially for modern rock and jazz players.


11:30 - 12:00

LUNCH (Lunch is included in the camp tuition)

In the UM Cafeteria, you will be able to select from the grill (hamburgers, hot dogs, French fries), salad bar, pizza, hot meal of the day, and the deli. Fresh fruits, desserts, and beverages are all included.


12:15 - 1:15

JAZZ LIVE!

Learn about important Jazz Styles by listening and playing. You will study different styles such as: Be Bop, Swing, and Latin. You will also have a jam session!


1:30 - 2:30

ELECTIVE 1 - our elective classes are your chance to try something new! No experience is necessary!

  • Songwriting: learn about the different styles of songs. This class will create an original piece.
  • Jazz Pop Vocal Ensemble: coached in a professional way
  • Latin Jazz Ensemble
  • Jazz Rock Guitar Ensemble
  • Digital Sound Design: You will explore digital editing, mixing, and mastering techniques, using the software Logic Pro 10. Students will be encouraged to write, record, and produce an original composition using these techniques

SNACK BREAK

Snacks (chips, cookies) are served!


2:45 - 3:45

ELECTIVE 2

  • Piano Lab: be coached on techniques used in contemporary piano styles.
  • Blues Ensemble
  • Improv Workshop: if you have never tried it or if you have already been doing it - this class will improve your skills.
  • Digital Sound Design: You will explore digital editing, mixing, and mastering techniques, using the software Logic Pro 10. Students will be encouraged to write, record, and produce an original composition using these techniques

Jazz Rock Jam: jam out and have fun!

Piano Lab: whether you already play piano or if you want to learn, practice in our piano studio under the guidance of our expert instructors.
