IF YOU PLAY A, BRASS, WOODWIND INSTRUMENT OR PIANO, BASS, GUITAR, OR DRUMS, AND WILL BE ENTERING GRADES 8-12 * IN THE FALL AND ARE AT AN ADVANCED LEVEL ON YOUR INSTRUMENT, THEN THE ADVANCED JAZZ PROGRAM IS RIGHT FOR YOU!


SO... IMMERSE YOURSELF IN OUR IN-DEPTH JAZZ EXPERIENCE AND STUDY THE ART OF IMPROVISATION WITH OTHER DEDICATED STUDENTS JUST LIKE YOU!


If you are a talented and outstanding young jazz musician, we offer you the opportunity to interact with our exceptional faculty - including members of the UM Frost School of Music in our highly demanding Advanced Program. Our mission is to bring together students like you from diverse cultural backgrounds and provide you with a challenging college-level experience.

The Program is open to all ADVANCED jazz instrumentalists who have been recommended by their music teacher.


* While this program is geared for high school students, younger students are welcome to enroll with a teacher recommendation.



PROGRAM DESCRIPTION


Your daily schedule includes a total of 5 classes: Latin Jazz Ensemble, Music Theory (Fundamentals or Advanced Jazz Theory and Improvisation), Swing Jazz Ensemble or Introduction to Media Writing and Film Scoring, plus 2 more Electives! We break for lunch, which is included in our program. You can extend your day by enrolling in an optional class or private lesson. The camp session ends with concerts that take place in one of the Frost School of Music's fine concert halls.

If you want to be surrounded 24/7 with kids from all over the US and other countries, if you think you may want to be a music major in a college like UM, if you know that performing or composing is what you want to do - THEN - this is the place for you!

REQUIREMENTS


  • For Winds, Piano, Bass, Guitar, and Drums
  • Entering grades 8-12. (younger students may enroll with a teacher recommendation)
  • Should be at an "Advanced" level of musical ability to participate.
  • If part of a school ensemble, should be performing at Music Grade level 5.0 or above.
  • Should have some experience in the skill of improvisation.
  • All applicants who meet out program requirements will be accepted to this Program!


HOW TO APPLY


  • Review the Daily Schedule to learn about the classes offered, and choose your electives and Optional Classes.
  • The Camp will email our "Teacher Recommendation Form" to your child's music teacher. This is to confirm that your camper is in the correct level. Make sure you know the e-mail address of your school or private music teacher before you start to register.

ADVANCED JAZZ PROGRAM

DAILY SCHEDULE (9:00 A.M. - 3:45 P.M.)

9:00 - 10:00

  • Performance Practices in Jazz: An in-depth look at Jazz through listening and playing. Improvisation in styles such as Be Bop, Swing, Latin, and Free style will be studied.
  • Rhythm Section Workshop: for pianists, bass players, and drummers.
  • Jazz Rock Guitar Ensemble.

10:15 - 11:15

MUSIC THEORY*

  • Music Theory: Fundamentals.
  • Advanced Jazz Theory and Improvisation: Pre requisite: thorough knowledge of theory fundamentals.
  • *All of the theory classes above use the innovative Frost School of Music experiential model, which incorporates ear training and improvisation.


11:30 - 12:00

LUNCH (Lunch is included in the camp tuition)

In the UM Cafeteria, you will be able to select from the grill (hamburgers, hot dogs, French fries), salad bar, pizza, hot meal of the day, and the deli. Fresh fruits, desserts, and beverages are also included.


12:15 - 1:15

ELECTIVE

  • Songwriting and Composition: for students who have had some experience either writing songs (music/lyrics) or instrumental compositions. You will learn about the various kinds of songs and compositions.
  • Music Biz: open to students who are interested in making a career out of performing, composing or producing music. This class goes through the basics of the business, including all aspects of publishing, record labels, and more. You will need to bring a laptop, Ipad, or tablet to class.
  • Digital Sound Design: This class will explore digital editing, mixing, and mastering techniques, using the software Logic Pro 10. Students will be encouraged to write, record, and produce an original composition using these techniques. (for students new to Logic Pro 10 and for those experienced in using it)
  • Blues Ensemble
  • Jazz Vocal Ensemble
