Honors Composition Program

If you want to be surrounded 24/7 with kids from all over the US and other countries, if you think you may want to be a music major in a college like UM, if you know that composing is what you want to do - THEN - this is the place for you!

Program Length

2 weeks


Session B: July 13 - July 24


9:00 am - 4:30 pm (optional 6th class from 4:30 pm - 5:30 pm)

Age Range

Entering grades 9-12 in the fall (qualified younger students may also enroll).

Highly talented and motivated students are invited to apply to our Honors Composition Program. This program has limited enrollment and students are chosen to participate based upon teacher recommendation and portfolio. Our mission is to bring together students like you from diverse cultural backgrounds and provide you with a challenging college-level experience. Campers should be prepared to work hard in order create an original composition during the camp session. These compositions will be short chamber works (instrumentation will be based on faculty availability) They will be performed by our camp faculty in the Final Concert. The concert will be professionally recorded and each camper will receive a recording of their piece


DEADLINE: This Program has limited enrollment. Qualified students are accepted within 2 weeks after submitting their audition. Applications submitted AFTER APRIL 30 will be placed on a waiting list. We encourage you to apply early.

  • An audition demo is required in order to be accepted into this program.
  • Entering grades 9-12 in the fall (highly talented younger students are welcome to apply)
  • Composers should submit mp3 recording and pdf scores of 2 original compositions.

DAILY SCHEDULE (9:00 A.M. - 4:30 P.M.)

HONORS COMPOSITION WORKSHOP: composers will work on their compositions, supervised by our composition faculty.

10:15 - 11:15

Form and Analysis: an in-depth approach from a composition point of view.

11:30 - 12:00

LUNCH (Lunch is included in the camp tuition)
In the UM Cafeteria, you will be able to select from the grill (hamburgers, hot dogs, French fries), salad bar, pizza, hot meal of the day, and the deli. Fresh fruits, desserts, and beverages are all included.

Private Instruction: Individual lessons with the Camp faculty.


Private lessons given by our camp staff may be scheduled after regular dismissal. The lessons are one hour long and all of the instructors are part of our camp faculty. The classes are held daily except for the last day of the session. When you register, you can select the day that you want. The camp cannot re-schedule a missed private lesson.

Before Care: 7:15 am - 9:00 am


Available from Broward, North Miami-Dade, and Miami Beach with sufficient enrollment. REQUESTS FOR THIS SERVICE MUST BE RECEIVED BY APRIL 15.

  • Enrollment is limited for this program. You will be notified of your acceptance after the camp receives ALL application materials: Online Registration, Application Fee, Teacher Recommendation, and Audition Demo. Your full deposit (plus the dorm deposit if you are staying in the dorm) is due within 3 days after receiving your acceptance letter.
  • Review the Daily Schedule to learn about the classes offered, and choose your elective.
  • The Camp will email our "Teacher Recommendation Form" to your music teacher. This is to confirm that you are in the correct level. Make sure you know the e-mail address of your school or private music teacher before you start to register.

Registration will open by Friday, January 18, 2019.
