If you play a STRING, BRASS, WOODWIND INSTRUMENT, or PIANO, and will be entering grades 5-8 *in the fall AND have had at least 2 years of training on your instrument, then the INTERMEDIATE CLASSICAL MUSIC PROGRAM is right for you!


SO... JOIN US FOR AN IN-DEPTH EXPERIENCE WITH CLASSICAL MUSIC THIS SUMMER!


*younger students are welcome to enroll with a teacher recommendation.



PROGRAM DESCRIPTION


Your daily schedule includes a total of 5 classes: Music Theory (fundamentals and advanced classes), Orchestra and Wind, String, and Piano Ensembles (2 periods), and 2 Electives. We break for lunch, which is included in our program. You can extend your day by enrolling in our optional classes or private lessons. The camp session ends with our amazing camp concerts - given by you!

Many of our advanced campers started in the Intermediate Program and now attend music magnet high schools.



REQUIREMENTS


  • Entering grades 5-8 in the fall. (younger students may enroll with a teacher recommendation)
  • Have been studying your instrument for 2 or more years.
  • Music Proficiency level 2 or above and/or has completed Book 2 of a standard music series in their instrument. Pianists should be playing Sonatinas or equivalent pieces.
  • PLEASE NOTE: All applicants who meet these requirements will be accepted to this Program!


HOW TO APPLY


  • Review the Daily Schedule to learn about the classes offered, and choose your electives and Optional Classes.
  • The Camp will email our "Teacher Recommendation" form to your child's music teacher. This is to confirm that your camper is in the correct level. Make sure you know the e-mail address before your start to register.

INTERMEDIATE CLASSICAL MUSIC PROGRAM

DROP OFF at the Frost School of Music

9:00 - 10:00

MUSIC THEORY

There is more to music than reading notes, and the summer is the best time to improve your knowledge or learn something new about scales, chords, composing, improvising, and ear training. We offer 2 levels: fundamentals and advanced music theory.


10:15 - 11:15

ENSEMBLE

  • Wind and String Ensembles: String and Wind players meet to study technique, learn to improvise, practice sight reading, try their skill at conducting and work on their performance for the final concert.
  • Piano Ensemble: Pianists work in small groups (duos,trios) in our keyboard lab to prepare for the final concert.

11:30 - 12:00

LUNCH (Lunch is included in the camp tuition)

In the UM Cafeteria, you will be able to select from the grill (hamburgers, hot dogs, French fries), salad bar, pizza, hot meal of the day, and the deli. Fresh fruits, desserts, and beverages are all included.


12:15 - 1:15

PIANO MUSIC LIVE! Campers meet in their Ensemble groups to study technique, learn to improvise, practice sight -reading skills and more!

ORCHESTRA: This ensemble performs in the final concert!


1:30 - 2:30

ELECTIVE 1 - our elective classes are your chance to try something new! No experience is necessary!

  • Songwriting: learn about the different styles of pop songs. This class will create an original piece
  • Piano Music from Bach to Gershwin: learn cool things about composers!
  • Jazz Pop Vocal Ensemble: no experience required-you just should love to sing!
  • Digital Sound Design: You will explore digital editing, mixing, and mastering techniques, using the software Logic Pro 10. Students will be encouraged to write, record, and produce an original composition using these techniques.
  • Jazz Rock String Ensemble: Here's your chance to try something different!
  • Latin Jazz Ensemble: classical wind and string players are welcome!

SNACK BREAK

Snacks (chips, cookies) are served!


2:45 - 3:45

ELECTIVE 2

  • Chorus: Get vocal technique tips while have fun singing in this special singing group. No experience required!
  • Piano Master Class: campers will be able to play their solos and have master-class style lessons.
  • Orchestra Music from Vivaldi to Stravinsky: discover new things about the music you play and the composers who wrote it!

Jazz Rock Jam: jam out and have fun!

Piano Lab: whether you already play piano or if you want to learn, practice in our piano studio under the guidance of our expert instructors.

Private Instruction: Individual lessons with the Camp faculty!
